The Combined Skills Programs at Vancouver Community College provide an opportunity for second language learners at Intermediate and Advanced levels of English to obtain career training/worksite experience with tailored ESL instruction. Students graduate with marketable job and communication skills for the workplace. Graduates earn a VCC certificate and are job ready.
All programs are full-time and taught by two instructors; a skills specialist and a qualified ESL teacher. The skills instructor develops theory and practical skills and the ESL instructor develops communications skills for training and employment. Students are prepared to conduct a successful job search.
The programs marked * prepare students for further training.
Accounting (ESL) *
This computer-oriented accounting program prepares students for employment in a variety of accounting positions in industry, government and service organizations.
Graduates have the option to continue their studies in VCC’s Financial Management program. Credits from this program are transferable to other post secondary institutions and accounting associations.
- 16 months - certificate

Baking and Pastry Arts/ESL
In this program students are instructed in basic baking techniques and procedures. Students learn how to make bread, hard rolls, sweet yeast dough products, pies, tarts, cookies and cakes. They also learn baking theory, proper use of baking equipment, hygiene and sanitation. Graduates may find employment in retail bakeries, supermarkets, hotel and catering firms.
- 4 levels - 12 months - certificate

- 2 practicums - 2 weeks each
- Prerequisite: Completion of Lower Intermediate or equivalent

Culinary Arts/ESL*
This comprehensive training prepares students to work as cooks in a variety of food service operations. Kitchen management, hot and cold kitchen training, sanitation (including FOODSAFE - Basic) and safety are covered. Upon successful completion of Level 2, students are qualified to work in restaurants, hotel kitchens, institutions and camps or have the option to complete Level 3 Culinary Arts.
- Level 1 and 2 - 10 months - certificate
- 2 practicums - 2 weeks each
- Prerequisite: Completion of Lower Intermediate or equivalent

Hairstyling/ESL
This comprehensive training in hair cutting, perming, colouring, styling and physiology prepares students to work as hairstylists in the province of British Columbia. Students will receive 500 hours of classroom instruction together with 1000 hours of practical training in all aspects of hairstyling. Upon graduation, students are ready to take the B.C. Cosmetology Examination.

Home Support/Resident Care Attendant/ESL 
This program trains students to work as health care providers in a variety of continuing care settings such as home support, assisted living, intermediate care, extended care and palliative care. Communication skills necessary for working with clients, their families, other care aides and supervisors are developed in the ESL component of the program.
- Levels 1-3 - 40 weeks - certificate
- 38 weeks with ESL instruction
- Clinicals - intermediate care, special needs, extended care, home support
- Prerequisite: Completion of Upper Intermediate or equivalent
